Tuberculosis is most usually detected in the lungs, but it can also affect lymph nodes, the gastrointestinal tract, the genito-urinary tract, the brain, brain coverings (meninges) or the heart (pericardium), bones, joints, skin, eyes, or practically any other organ in the body. Tuberculosis does not affect hair or nails. Bacteria in the lungs proliferate and cause pneumonia, as well as chest discomfort, hemoptysis, and a chronic cough in pulmonary tuberculosis. Lymph nodes in the vicinity of the heart and lungs enlarge. When tuberculosis bacteria attempt to travel to other parts of the body, the immune system frequently intervenes, causing scar tissue or fibrosis to form around the TB bacteria. This is beneficial.
