A Pap smear, sometimes referred to as a Pap test, is a technique used to screen women for cervical cancer. The cervix, the lower, thin end of your uterus that is located at the top of your vagina, is where cells are collected for a Pap smear. A Pap smear can detect cervical cancer early, increasing your chances of recovery. Additionally, a Pap smear might identify alterations in your cervical cells that may indicate cancer development down the road. Using a Pap smear to identify these abnormal cells early on is the first step towards perhaps stopping the development of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is detected by Pap smear screening. A pelvic exam is typically performed in addition to the Pap smear. For women over 30, a test for human papillomavirus (HPV), a common STD that can lead to cervical cancer, may be administered in addition to a Pap test. A Pap smear may not always be performed in favor of an HPV test.
