Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes disruptions in the electrical system of the brain. Because it causes the rest of the body to receive false signals, we refer to this disturbance as a seizure. The majority of people with epilepsy, both adults and children, would start taking an anti-seizure medication. If the first medication is ineffective, your doctor may recommend a second or third medication. If none of those work, the patient may be a candidate for epilepsy surgery. Doctors must first locate the part of the brain causing the seizures in order to treat epilepsy. Then, if it is possible to do so without experiencing any significant negative effects, that part of the brain will be eliminated. If medication is ineffective and a patient is not a candidate for surgery, neurostimulation is another therapy option. A device needs to be surgically placed in order to stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs from the person's neck to their chest. This requires surgically implanting a device, either under the skin on the chest to stimulate the vagus nerve or directly on the brain to produce electric signals that help regulate seizures (a nerve that travels from the brain to the chest).
