A person's brain's electrical system is disrupted by the neurological condition epilepsy. We refer to this disturbance as a seizure because it causes the rest of the body to receive erroneous signals. Almost everyone with epilepsy, both children and adults, would begin on an anti-seizure drug. Your doctor may prescribe a second or third drug if the first one is ineffective. If those don't help, epilepsy surgery may be an option if the patient is eligible. In order to treat epilepsy, doctors must first identify the region of the brain that is generating the seizures. If this can be done without having any substantial adverse consequences, that region of the brain will then be removed. Neurostimulation is a different treatment option if drugs are ineffective and a patient isn't a candidate for surgery. In order to stimulate the vagus nerve (a nerve that goes from the person's neck to their chest), a device must be surgically implanted. This entails surgically implanting a device either directly on the brain to provide electric signals that assist control seizures, or under the skin on the chest to stimulate the vagus nerve (a nerve that travels from the brain to the chest).
