Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of a woman's uterus grows outside of the uterus. This tissue behaves like normal uterine tissue during your period: it breaks down and bleeds at the end of the cycle. But that blood has nowhere to go. The surrounding areas may become inflamed or swollen. You may have scar tissue and wounds. Endometriosis most often occurs in the ovaries.
