Mirena can be used to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. It can also be used to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding in women who also want birth control. Mirena contains 52 mg of levonorgestrel, a hormone commonly used in birth control pills. The device releases approximately 20 µg of levonorgestrel per day. Over time, the device releases smaller amounts of hormones, requiring Mirena to be replaced after five years.
